What is "Greenwashing?"

Greenwash is a term that is used to describe the act of misleading consumers regarding the environmental practices of a company or the environmental benefits of a product or service.

Greenwashing is a practice where companies attempy to make their products appear to be environmentally friendly by using unregulated environmental buzzwords and terms as well as other marketing techniques.

The United States based watchdog group CorpWatch defines greenwash as "the phenomena of socially and environmentally destructive corporations, attempting to preserve and expand their markets or power by posing as friends of the environment."

Is Greenwashing a Real Danger?

According to a TerraChoice Environmental Marketing report released in 2007, "an overwhelming majority of environmental marketing claims in North America are inaccurate, inappropriate, or unsubstantiated." Greenwashing is a real danger when you consider TerraChoice used metrics provided by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to review over 1,000 products and with the exception of a single product all raised red flags.
